The Nigerian movie sector has grown to become one of the major key player in the Art and Entertainment sector that has continued to contribute to the GDP of the country.
Despite the Lockdown event caused by the Covid-19 virus, they seem to have picked up greatly as so many movies with great storyline and are selling fast in the cinemas have been produced recently.
Below are the Top 10 movies of the year.
1. Omo ghetto( The Saga)
Omo Ghetto (The Saga) also known as Omo Ghetto 2 2020 Nigerian gangster comedy film co-directed by Funke Akindele and JJC Skillz.
The film stars Funke Akindele, Chioma Akpota, Nancy Isime, Eniola Badmus, Bimbo Thomas, Deyemi Okanlawon and Mercy Aigbe in the lead roles.
This is a story about Lefty(funke Akindele) who, together with her squad from the ghetto, who finds herself falling in love, an act which is in contrast to the ‘code of the streets’
The movie was released on 25th December, 2020.
The movie generated N189.4 million during its first week of release and a record N99.9 million in its opening weekend.
It went on to become the highest-grossing Nollywood movie of all time and still currently leading since 4 months of it’s release with N636,129,120.
“Prophetess” follows the story of Ajoke( Toyin Abraham), a local Prophetess who makes a bogus prediction about a football match which sets off a chain of events beyond her control. With her life in danger, she enlists the help of her sister to save her.
The likes of Toyin Abraham, Kehinde Bankole, Kunle Remi, Ronke Ojo, Tina Mba, Stan Nze, Uzor Arukwe, Deyemi Okanlanwon, Seyi Awolowo, Blessing Jessica Obasi, Adedimeji Lateef among others were able to make this movie great.
The movie which was released on 4th April,2021 so far has generated N108,416,600.
3. Breaded life
Breaded Life is a 2021 Nigerian dramedy film written and directed by Biodun Stephen.
It was co-produced by Biodun Stephen, Tara Ajibulu and Kayode Sowade. It stars MC Lively, Bisola Aiyeola, Timini Egbuson, Bimbo Ademoye, Bolanle Ninalowo and Adedimeji Lateef.
It was premiered on April 10, 2021 at iMax cinema Lagos and then released nationwide on April 16 2021.
The movie which is a sequel to picture perfect produced in 2016 tells the story of a reckless young man, who wakes up to find that no one can recognise him except a local bread seller.
4. Namaste Wahala
Namaste Wahala (translated as Hello trouble) is a 2020 Nigerian cross-cultural romantic comedy film produced, written and directed by Hamisha Daryani Ahuja on her directorial debut.
The film stars Ini Dima-Okojie and Ruslaan Mumtaz in the lead roles.
A love story between an Indian man and a Nigerian woman, the challenges they face and how they were able to overcome all.
Ponzi is 2021 Nigerian comedy film based on the victims 2016 MMM Ponzi scheme.
It was written by Toluwani Obayan, produced by Vincent Okonkwo and directed by Kayode Kasum.
It stars Jide Kosoko, Chinyere Wilfred, Timini Egbuson, Broda Shaggi and Mr Macaroni.
The movie which was released on March 12th follows the story of residents of a close who take on an amateur heist after falling prey to a Ponzi Scheme.
6. The Therapist
The Therapist is a 2021 Nigerian drama film directed by Kayode Kasum.The film stars Rita Dominic, Michelle Dede, Toyin Abraham in the lead roles.
The movie centers around a woman in a state of dilemma between making a drastic decision or her marriage ends up in a messy divorce.
The film was released on 26 March 2021.
7. The Razz guy
The Razz Guy is a 2021 Nigerian comedy-drama film directed by Udoka Oyeka, written by Egbemawei Sammy produced by Trino Motion Pictures. It was released across Cinemas on March 19, 2021
The storyline follows as “When an international business merger is assigned to a rude and condescending senior executive, a curse that affects his ability to speak properly is cast on him by an office cleaner”.
The stars of the movie includes the lead actor Nosa ‘Lasisi Elenu’ Afolabi and Others are Adeyemi Nosa Afolabi, Nancy Isime, Omotunde Adebowale David.
8. La femme Anjola
La Femme Anjola is a 2021 film written by Tunde Babalola and directed by Mildred Okwo. It is a film noir psychological thriller which stars Rita Dominic and Nonso Bassey as the lead roles.
It was released in cinemas on March 19, 2021.
It tells a story of a young male stock broker manipulated to commit a crime which turns his life upside down.
Eyimofe also known as This Is My Desire is a 2020 Nigerian drama film produced, written and directed by twin brothers Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri.
The film is made of two chapters called Spain and Italy.
It follows the stories of Mofe, a factory technician, and Rosa, a hairdresser, on their quest for what they believe will be a better life on foreign shores.
It stars Jude Akuwudike, Temi Ami-Williams, Cynthia Ebijie, Sadiq Daba, Tomiwa Edun, Jacobs Alexander, Chioma ‘Chigul’ Omeruah, Lala Akindoju and premieres in cinemas on April 23.
10. The wait
“The wait” is inspired by the director Yemi Morafa faith- based books.
It talks about the lives of different individuals and families as they try to overcome the challenges and troubles of life while waiting for their moment in the sun. It’s about the lives of two couples, a job seeker, and a passionate doctor, intertwined in a tale of patience and redemption.
Its cast include Nse Ikpe-Etim, Deyemi Okanlawon, Kate Henshaw, Joke Silva, Jimmy Odukoya, Chimezie Imo and Meg Otanwa.
